Eris was the goddess of strife, chaos and discord, the daughter of Nyx and Erebus and the sister of Moros, Ker, Thanatos, Hypnos, Momus, Oizys, Apate, Philotes, Geras and Nemesis.
Because of Eris’ disagreeable nature, she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. When she turned up anyway, she was refused admittance and, in a rage, threw a golden apple amongst the goddesses inscribed “καλλίστῃ”, which means “to the fairest.” Three goddesses, Hera, Aphrodite and Athena, laid claim it. The hapless Paris, prince of Troy, was appointed to select the fairest by Zeus, and he finally chose Aphrodite.
